The fish is also marked by a red spot or streak on each side of the body./* Its small size, short broad head and blunt snout and large eyes set in a small head are unique among cichlids, but what really makes it distinct is the large dorsal plate and soft X-shaped caudal fin, and the combination of a small anterior dorsal fin and a large posterior anal fin. It is the type species of a new family, Cynochromidae (Cynochromidae is also the name of a new genus in malacanthopterygii in which it belongs). It is endemic to Cunene river system in Angola, where it lives in freshwater and brackish seepage. Despite this similarity, it is a very distinct species. This extremely rare endemic cichlid is a strange-looking fish, both from the male perspective where it has two large flattened scutes on the back which give it a dorsal profile similar to the unrelated, spiny eels, and from the female perspective where it has small hind fins that are fringed by larger fins.
